  • Green Peter Dam less risky after extensive studies, rehab and assessment

    After years of extensive studies, a risk assessment and recent rehabilitation of spillway gates, officials re-classify Green Peter Dam, near Sweet Home, Ore., as a Low Risk dam. Recent rehabilitation of the spillway tainter gates for trunnion friction and overall reliability have improved the risk characterization. These efforts along with a detailed review of the dam’s hazards, performance and consequences, helped decrease risks from the last assessment, which rated Green Peter as a High Risk dam.

  • Federal agencies decide the Columbia River System Operations environmental impact statement balances system purposes

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation and Bonneville Power Administration signed a joint Record of Decision on Monday that commits the agencies to implementing immediate and long-term actions related to the ongoing operations, maintenance and configuration of 14 federal dams that compose the Columbia River System.

  • August inflows much below average in northern Missouri River Basin

    August precipitation was well-below normal in the Missouri River Basin, particularly in the western and far northern portions, which received less than 25% of normal precipitation. The lack of precipitation and dry soil conditions resulted in 74% of average August runoff in the Missouri River Basin above Sioux City, Iowa (upper Basin). The 2020 calendar year forecast for the upper Basin, updated on September 1, is 30.6 million acre-feet (MAF), 119% of average. Average annual runoff for the upper Basin is 25.8 MAF. Runoff in the upper Basin during the remainder of 2020 is forecast to be below average.

  • Corps lifts restrictions at campgrounds in Rogue and Willamette valleys

    Campgrounds at Lost Creek, Cottage Grove, Dorena and Lookout Point lakes will open Thursday, June 11.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District has closed several recreation sites to protect the public and Corps employees.

  • Corps steps down releases from Gavins Point Dam to winter release rate

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began reducing Gavins Point releases to the winter release rate on Nov. 30. The releases will be stepped down at a rate of 3,000 cubic feet per second per day until they reach 27,000 cfs where they are expected to remain through December. Releases will be reduced to 25,000 cfs in January and remain near that rate for the remainder of the winter. Gavins Point Dam winter releases normally range between 12,000 and 17,000 cfs. Higher-than-average winter releases from the Missouri River Mainstem System projects, including Gavins Point, continue emptying water from the 2019 runoff season still in storage.
