    Salt Creek Dam Site 8 at Wagontrain lake near Hickman is one of 14 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District dams in Nebraska.

    And the survey says?

    Dam Monitoring Survey data from the Omaha District Surveys, Mapping and Geographic Information Systems Section Field Survey team is one element of a larger Dam Safety inspection and monitoring program. The USACE Dam Safety program and supporting deformation monitoring surveys help to ensure each of the Omaha District’s 27 dams is ready to capture floodwater from the next storm.

    Department of Veteran Affairs Replacement Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. Reception area of Clinic Building North which houses patient services including a large audiology clinic. Clinic buildings are scheduled to be handed to the Department of Veteran Affairs in early 2017 who will lead equipment installation.

    Aurora, CO VA Health Center project nears 80 percent completion; focusing on the task at hand

    It has been nearly a year since the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District awarded a $570 million fixed price-incentive contract to Kiewit-Turner, A Joint Venture, to continue construction of the Veterans Affairs Eastern Colorado Health Care System Hospital in Aurora, Colorado. The notice to proceed was issued a few days later on Nov. 2. The project is being constructed in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Department of Veterans Affairs with Kiewit-Turner as the primary contractor. In mid-June, the project, 12 buildings includes 2 inpatient buildings, 2 clinic buildings, a diagnostic and treatment center, a research building, concourse, and energy center totaling 1.2 million square feet, and 3 garages for staff and visitor parking totaling 2,242 spaces, was nearly 55 percent complete.

    This tennis shoe, covered with zebra mussel shells, was found near Lake Meade, Nevada. The invasive zebra mussel reproduces rapidly attaching to boat propellers and infrastructure such as dams and hydropower plants causing considerable damage. In her five-year lifetime, a single quagga or zebra mussel will produce about five million eggs, 100,000 of which reach adulthood.

    Invaders: “The truth is out there”

    In the real world, invaders ARE among us and this week, February 21-27, has been National Invasive Species Awareness week. The invasive species aren’t from another planet though. Across the United States, various invasive species threaten our natural ecosystems. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages 12 million acres of public land and is the largest provider of water-based outdoor recreation in the nation with 403 lakes and river projects in 43 states totaling 55,390 miles of shoreline.

    On November 1, 2015, Joe Chamberlain finished the New York City Marathon with a time of 3:10:20. His advice to himself upon leaving Omaha was simply “finish strong”. As Chamberlain reached the south end of Central Park, the noise went from deafening silence to a deafening roar from the crowd. “I couldn’t believe I was there,” he said. “Their cheers echoed off the buildings. They really did carry runners to the finish, I wanted to keep running as soon as I saw the buildings and heard them. Usually, the last 3 miles are tough but those 3 miles were fantastic and I’ve won races.”

    Kim Adkins, Readiness and Contingency Operations, Operations Chief for the Northwestern Division was recently recognized as 2014 Emergency Manager of the Year by the Chief of Engineers, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Headquarters. Her recognition as Emergency Manager of the Year spotlights her role as the Civil Emergency Program Manager for POD during day-to-day operations and in support of disaster response operations.

    Kim Adkins, Readiness and Contingency Operations, operations chief for the Northwestern Division was recently recognized as 2014 Emergency Manager of the Year by the Chief of Engineers, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Headquarters. Adkins recently returned to the Northwestern Division after spending the last four years working as the POD Civil Emergency Program Manager for the Readiness and Contingency Operations Division. Since returning to NWD, she has deployed to Washington State in support of the wildfires that struck the eastern part of the state in August.
  • At about the midway point of the 2014 Boston Marathon. Chamberlain finished the Boston Marathon, having run not 26.2 miles but 26.43 with a time of 3:01:01.

    On August 6, 2015, Thomas North, Senior Structural Engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Northwestern Division was awarded USACE Engineer of the Year. The award recognized his service for development of design/inspection and inventory expertise of USACE hydraulic steel structures and bridges, advising the nation of St. Lucia on bridge design and advising USAID on incorporating ASCE-7 seismic provisions for USAID Palestinian projects on the West Bank, Israel.

    On August 6, 2015, Thomas North, Senior Structural Engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Northwestern Division was awarded USACE Engineer of the Year.
  • A tradition for runners to ensure they have everything they need for the day of their race, is to set out their gear the night before. The wrist bands help motivate during a run. "For Boston" bands like the one in the middle were sold to raise funds for the victims of the 2013 bombing. The "INSPIRE" band is a gift from his friend Maria who is among those who inspired him to run the Boston Marathon and the purple band has the word "Hope" inscribed on it. Chamberlain wore the purple band at the request of his brother's wife, Irene, for his brother and coworkers whose spouses were battling cancer.
