    Omaha District’s rapid response team helps extinguish coalmine fire in Washington state.

    In June, after an unsuccessful attempt by local firefighters to put out a smoldering fire at an abandoned Navy coalmine in Cumberland, Washington, the Office of Surface Mining and Reclamation reached out to the USACE Omaha District’s technical center of expertise rapid response team for assistance.

    Omaha awards environmental remediation contract for Front Range Air Force bases

    The Omaha District awarded an $8.5 million Optimized Remediation Contract in July that focuses on a large, joint environmental clean-up effort at six Air Force bases across four states in the Northwest also referred to as the Front Range group.

    Between March 13 and March 23, 2019, per preliminary analysis by the National Weather Service, over 50 gages on the Missouri River and its tributaries in the region set new stage records. Nearly all of these new records were on unregulated areas of the Missouri Basin -- tributaries and the Missouri River downstream of Gavins Point Dam.

    Partnering on Lower Missouri River flood risk management solutions

    The historic nature of the 2019 flood, in addition to severe flooding that has occurred over the past decade, served as a catalyst for the governors of Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri to come together to discuss solutions for improving the resiliency of the lower Missouri River Basin.

    An Omaha District Unmanned Aerial System captures work on the Union Dike near Valley Nebraska after the 2019 runoff event. The flood event was due to water runoff from unregulated tributaries and compromised more than 500 miles of levees along the Missouri River.

    Corps of Engineers leveraging drone technology to capture imagery after flooding in Midwest

    In mid-to-late March, flood water covered much of eastern Nebraska, western Iowa, and northern Missouri. Due to the extreme amount of water in the area, members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District had trouble getting to the more than 500 miles of compromised levees to surveille for damage so they turned to a new option to the Omaha District....drones. Drones, or unmanned aerial systems, offer the District the opportunity to fly over affected levees and other flooded areas without putting District employees in danger.

    Omaha District System Restoration Team in full swing bringing levee system back up

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District responded to the devastating unregulated runoff event of 2019 by activating the Omaha Systems Restoration Team, whose mission is to provide regional, time-sensitive repair of levees, dams and other flood control structures that were damaged throughout the Missouri River Basin.
