  • Missouri Basin Runoff Below Average in July

    July runoff in the Missouri River Basin above Sioux City, Iowa, was 2.3 million acre feet (MAF), 69 percent of average, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps). This follows a June runoff that was 74 percent of average. The 2016 calendar year runoff forecast is 22.7 MAF, which is 89 percent of the historic average. The total volume of water stored in the Mainstem Reservoir System is currently 59.4 MAF, occupying 3.3 MAF of the 16.3 MAF combined flood control storage zones. “System storage peaked on June 22 at 60.1 MAF and is gradually declining. The water currently stored in the annual flood control zone will be released during the remainder of the year to serve navigation, water supply and other downstream purposes and will be completely evacuated prior to the start of next year’s runoff season,” said Jody Farhat, chief of the Corps’ Missouri River Basin Water Management Division.
  • Missouri River Implementation Committee to meet in La Vista, NE

    The Missouri River Recovery Implementation Committee (MRRIC) will hold its 34th meeting August 9-11, 2016 in La Vista, NE. Members of the public will have an opportunity during each daily session to address the Committee and the lead federal agencies (the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service)) – regarding the Missouri River Recovery Program (MRRP). The meeting will be held at the Courtyard by Marriott, Omaha-La Vista, 12560 Westport Parkway, La Vista, NE 68128, beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, and concluding at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11. The MRRIC meeting agenda can be found online at www.MRRIC.org. All meeting sessions are open to the public.

  • Army Corps of Engineers seeks public comments on on proposal to renew and revise nationwide permits

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced today it is seeking comments on its proposal to renew and revise 50 nationwide permits for work in wetlands and other waters that are regulated by Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and/or Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899. In addition, USACE is proposing to issue two new nationwide permits that pertain to authorizing the removal of low-head dams and the construction and maintenance of living shorelines.
