Clinton Lake dam road closure related to COVID-19

Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Published April 6, 2020

The road across Clinton Dam (E 900 Road) will be closed as of 9:00 a.m. on April 7, 2020, until further notice due to unsafe gatherings and parking conditions near the south end of the dam.  This decision was made in conjunction with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department with the safety of our visitors and community in mind.

With the recent “Stay at Home” order for the State of Kansas due to COVID-19, visitation to the lake as a public gathering spot has increased dramatically. While exercise and fresh air is encouraged, large gathering spots, such as the south end of the dam, create unsafe conditions not only for those visitors gathering but also for those traveling across the dam.

This area has tight shoulders not intended for large groups to gather and has a 50-mph speed limit; thus, the larger the group, the more dangerous the roadway becomes.

Travelers can use County Road 458 and E 902 Road to access all major roadways, the city of Lawrence, Eagle Bend Golf Course, and all other recreation areas below Clinton Lake dam.  The road will be reopened as soon as we deem it safe.
