Engineering With Nature® initiative captures sustainability award for the Corps
In one Engineering With Nature® project located on Washington’s Skagit River, USACE Seattle District incorporated salmon habitat features into levee repairs made from 2007 to 2011. Woody debris is an essential component for salmon rearing and refuge habitat complexity. Large logs with rootwads were laid on the riverbed bench of the levee as a mitigation feature that delivers benefits to the fish during high river flows. Skagit River has been designated as a critical habitat for three salmonid species listed under the Endangered Species Act.
